Art is a wonderful thing that just about anyone can appreciate. While you can look up the most famous art pieces on the internet, there’s nothing quite like going to an art museum and seeing them in person. Art museums featuring incredible art are located all over the world, and the United States has a pretty wide selection to choose from. Here are a few of the best art museums you can visit in the United States.
Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum
Located in the Upper East Side of New York City, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (commonly known just as the Guggenheim) is mostly known for its more modern artwork. When the Guggenheim opened in 1939 it was known as the “Museum of Non-Objective Painting” it was mainly full of abstract and non-objective works. In 1952, they chose to rename it after the founder of the institution and began displaying not only abstract artwork but also contemporary work from all genres. If you ever visit, be sure to check out “Paris Through the Window” by Marc Chagall and “Before the Mirror” by Edouard Manet, to name a few.
Los Angeles County Museum of Art
The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (sometimes called the LACMA) has an estimated 100,000 works of art that range from ancient times to the present day, making it the largest art museum west of Chicago. The art the museum is known for is widely American, with a focus on pre-Columbian and Latin American art in particular. A few standout pieces to keep an eye out for if you visit are “Levitated Mass” by Michael Heizer and “Urban Light” by Christ Burden, which is an outdoor installation. The LACMA has many outdoor art pieces due to the weather typically being so great.
Art Institute of Chicago
Speaking of Chicago, the Art Institute of Chicago is another must-visit museum on our list. The second-largest art museum in the United States, the Art Institute of Chicago features an extensive collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art of the American, African American, antique Asian, and 20th-century furniture variety. A few pieces worth checking out when visiting include “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte” by Georges Seurat as well as pretty much every piece the museum features by Monet.
Philadelphia Museum of Art
If you’re looking for a wide collection of American artwork both old and new, check out the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Home to over 220,000 art pieces, you’ll be able to find paintings by a variety of artists such as Manet, DuChamp, and Marisso, to name a few. The museum features a fashion-heavy Creative Africa exhibit, play installations by Joseph Kosuth, and a collection of Rodin sculptures.
Metropolitan Museum of Art
We couldn’t have a list of the best art museums in the United States without the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the largest museum in the United States. To give you an idea of exactly how large it is, the museum features over two million pieces of art that have been curated from all around the world, including Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. While many of the pieces are permanent installations, the museum is constantly evolving to include new pieces of art both old and new. A few pieces worth checking out when visiting are the museum’s Egyptian collection and multiple Couture designs by Balenciaga, Laurent, and Chanel, to name a few.
