As an artist, one of the toughest things to get over is that buying canvases can be expensive. When practicing a new skill, the last thing you want to do is waste your hard-earned money on a bunch of canvases to simply practice on. If you’re up for a DIY challenge, you can save money by making your own canvases at home. It’s fun, good for the environment when upcycling materials, and saves you money. Here’s how to do it:
You’ll need to gather your materials. They include:
- Nail gun or staple gun
- White glue
- A cotton sheet or linen material
- Chipboard which can be found at art stores or online
Cut your wood of choice to size. For example, if you want a canvas that is 12×14 inches, you will want 2 pieces that are 12 inches in length and 2 pieces that are 14 inches in length. You can do this using a table saw. You will want each piece to be 1 inch in width.
Join your pieces of wood together using your fasteners of choice.
Take your chipboard and cut it to the size of your wood, apply glue and lay the chipboard on top.
Cut cotton or linen material to size but add 1 extra inch.
Stretch and glue (or staple) the material to the frame. You may want to dilute the glue with a little bit of water and spread it evenly over the chipboard with a brush.
Making a canvas board
A canvas board is a simple Do It Yourself you can do at home without the use of any tools. Simply take some chipboard and cut it to your chosen size, spread glue evenly over the top as mentioned in step 6, and stretch your chosen linen material over it, folding the leftovers over the back.
Enjoy the canvas you worked to make and create a piece of art!
Making canvases at home is a great alternative to spending money on art supplies. Canvas boards are quick and easy to make and great for using when you have specific techniques you want to practice.
